Additional Learning Needs

Key Stage 3 Years 7/8/9

Pupils in Year 7 will be familiar with Heolddu Comprehensive School from their very first day, as we run a series of highly successful transition visits for pupils with additional needs. All pupils with additional learning needs will benefit from a structure and curriculum that suits their needs, including:

• Structured intervention programmes
• Additional classroom support from experienced learning support assistants
• Additional timetabled literacy and numeracy sessions
• Nurture provision at unstructured times of the day
• Access to assistive technology such as spellcheckers, ipads, word processors and reading pens

Heolddu Extra

For a small number of ALN pupils, a highly differentiated curriculum is appropriate. These pupils will be taught by one ALN specialist teacher and 2 learning support assistants for the majority of their lessons, in the Heolddu Extra provision. They will have access to specialist equipment, highly structured learning programmes and a high ratio of adult support, in order to develop their academic, social and emotional skills. Pupils accessing this provision are able to be educated in this way throughout Key Stage 3.
