Key Stage 3 Year 7

At Heolddu we seek to capitalise upon the natural fascination that computers hold for our pupils, and develop the skills required to make all aspects of information technology accessible and understandable. We have a rolling programme of investment in computer technology, which has led to the school having five dedicated ICT suites, a room for Additional Learning Needs support, suites of computers in Technology, Music and Geography, and an ever growing number of tablet devices.  Year 7 and 8 pupils have benefitted this year from programming workshops using Kodu, which were delivered by the Technocamps team. 

 

 

In year 7, pupils develop their ICT skills through projects in Internet safety, the Solar System, research techniques, endangered animals and travel. They use both Microsoft Offices programs and Serif software to create a range of presentations, leaflets, spreadsheets and other documents. Programing skills are also developed through the use of Scratch and Kodu.  We are awaiting with excitement the delivery of BBC Microbit computers to further develop pupil interests.

Key Stage 3 Year 8

During year 8, pupils continue to develop their skills on a spreadsheet topic about global warming. They create informative websites about issues relevant to teenagers, and as part of this, they develop their skills in using animation software. Another topic covered during the year allows them to develop their use of multimedia resources to create interactive quizzes. The programming language Python is introduced, which builds upon the skills learnt by using Scratch in year 7.

Key Stage 3 Year 9

During year 9, GCSE style tasks are introduced so that pupils are fully aware of what the subject involves should they opt to continue their study in Key Stage 4. Presentation and research skills are developed in a topic about healthy eating, and they then go on to create spreadsheets for a small business and databases. They also extend their knowledge of website creation, and incorporate animation and video which they have created.
